RESEARCH INTO KEY GENRE DIRECTOR .

James Wan

In this section I will be explaining about the directors in the horror genre that I will be studying.  One of the more popular directors in the horror trailers is James Wan. He has directed plenty of films with the majority being in the horror genre. Not only does James direct them he also has written a few and produced and edited others.

Some of the titles that he has been working on are Saw, Insidious, Dead Silence and The Conjuring. These films are all horror based and contain all the conventions of horror film from possesions and demons to mass murders.

James Wan wants to try and branch out of horror films to other films, however, he has found success in the horror genre so is therefore sceptical about moving. He has done calaborations with other directors such as:

Judith Anna Roberts

Leigh Whannell

Patrick Wilson

James Wan

James Wan is well known for his use of blood and gore. These are seen in such films such as Saw and the visual effects and use of latex prosetic effects make a viewing more realistic. His expert knowledge with the use of inventive camera angles and great story lines make his flims pinacle in the genre. He has become very popular within the industry so much so that his budget for each new film is slowly increasing. This can be seen in his new film that he is directing which is 'Too Fast Too Furious 7'.

James Wan has a particular appearance when it comes to films; they normally depict extreme and intense scenes of pain. This can be seen within the Saw franchise as there are several scenes of extreme torture, suffering and execution. Due to the graphic nature of all James' films it is easy to recognise the films in which he has held a directive role. James Wan films are not only about the paranormal and supernatural but also about psychologically disturbed characters. These similar features are seen thoughout all of his films, most of his narratives contain false hope for the victimised characters towards the end of the film, this allows sequels to be added to the series. An example of this would be from Insidious; where the main character retrieves his son from the further, however gets possessed in the process.

Leigh Whannell

Leigh Whannell is another well known director of horror movies that has worked along side James Wan with all the films he has done. Leigh is an Austrailian producer and started his career as an actor and moved into directing and writing as his career improved.

His career is similar to James Wan's being focused on directing and writing within the horror genre. With being a writer in all the 'Saw' films and the 'Insidious' films along with starring in some of the films which he writes. He has starred in many of the 'Saw' films along with being one of the main characters in the 'Incidious' movie.

Leigh Whannell interest in horror movies has created his own film identity. His writing and producing of horror films with intense gore and supernatural powers have cause his footprint in the film industry to be full of graphic and extreme productions. This repetition of intense horror can be seen in his film franchise; Saw. This series of six films follows in his recognisable style of graphic horror. Insidious is slighty different from his predictable vivid torture scenes and branches out into the paranormal features such as demonic possession.

One feature that is similar thoughout all of Leigh's productions is the use of dim lighting, creating a sense of dying hope. As you can see from the two examples below, blue and green fluorescent lights are used to highlight the dim lighting. In the example from Saw below, green lighting is used to accentuate the red blood as these are complimentary colours, allowing the blood to stand out.
